Are Huda Beauty Lip Products Worth The Hype?

I've pretty much lived under a rock when it comes to Instagram for almost a year now. Yet, the hype around the Huda Beauty lip products has still reached me. I was so over the moon when I heard that Sephora were bringing the brand with them to Germany. However, in store I couldn't finde one of the many shades that really spoke to me - I either owned a very similar shade already or it just didn't really suit my skin tone. But around Christmas Sephora had the Contour and Strobe Lip Sets - a set of three complimenting shades that feature two mine and one full-version of the three lip products Duda offers - and I immediately had to get one to see if they're worth the hype.

The set I was the most drawn to was Muse & Angelic. You know how much I love the Kylie Cosmetics Candy K and Muse is quite a similar shade. Plus, a ros├ęgold strobe?! Yes, please! I have also found that Cultbeauty sell these sets seemingly all year around!

Packaging

The set comes in a metal box shaped like lips in an almost corresponding colour to the set. The box is pretty but nothing I´d actually keep on my shelves. Also the lid is kind of wonky which is driving me slightly mad. But it´s a nice bonus packaging and feels generally very sturdy.

The Lip Strobe and Liquid Matte have such a gorgeous packaging. It´s so simple and sleek and yet so chic. I love that the Liquid Matte has a matte glass and a matte black cap while the Lip Strobe is glossy - it makes them so easy to grab out of my driver. Plus, I love that they are slightly different but not too different.  They also feel very sturdy and have a nice weight to them. The applicator of the Liquid Matte is a normal doe foot applicator which honestly, I don't have a big opinion on. It works and it works well for me. The Lip Strobe has a more angled and teardrop shaped applicator which I loved a little bit more. I feel like the shape and the angle make the application a lot easier for me!

The Lip Contour also has a very simple matte black (or rather velvety black) packaging with a coloured end to know that you've grabbed the right colour. It feels nice in my hand and I honestly prefer my lip pencils to be more simple in design as it makes it easier to actually sharpen (and destroy) it.

The Lip Contour In Muse

This lip pencil is super matte and can be worn as a full lip product as well. The colour is a cool-toned mauve (or lilac) with a brown undertone. So far I've mostly used it as a lip liner but I can also see myself wearing it all over my lips in the future... because I've fallen in love! I was expecting this to be nothing more than a simple lip liner but it´s such a fantastic product!

Firstly, it has this super soft and creamy consistency which means it applies like an absolute dream. There's no tugging at my lips, it just smoothly glides along them and gives off amazing pigmentation at the same time. Yet I can apply it very precisely and won't end up with my lip line already smudged. Once it´s applied I can smudge and blend it for a short while - but I gotta be really quick with it. After it´s set it truly wont budge unless you target it with oils. It definitely has helped me to keep my lipsticks inside the lip line as well! It also has this really nice, comfortable matte finish which I like as it makes it easily wearable and it won't ever stick out at the edges of my matte lipstick.

It truly is super long wear and has always lasted untill I decided to take it off. Even with other lip products on top I've found that this was mostly the one product still staying on my lips (& helping other products stay on longer too). The only thing that could disturb it was oil - and honestly, every lip product suffers against oil. The one thing I will say is that in direct comparison with the Liquid Matte in Muse the colours don't perfectly fit as this one is a little more brown. But overall I'm so super impressed with the Lip Contour!

The Liquid Matte In Muse

As I'm one of those weird people that is very sensitive to makeup smells I´ll point out the thing that I first noticed: this very, very sweet smell. It reminds me of something but I cannot really pinpoint it. It´s just really sweet but after the application I don't mind it too much. Muse is a super pretty cool-toned rose/lilac/mauve colour that really reminds me of Candy K - it´s just right in there with my favourite lipstick colours!

The formula for the Liquid Matte is super, super liquidy. That means it´s also super lightweight which I really appreciate! However, it does make application a little bit tricky for me. I feel like there's always a danger of accidentally over-painting my lips. Plus, around the edges of the applicator it kind of pools which leaves these ridiculous lines that I only seem to get rid of when I draw over them again which is so difficult without overdrawing my lips! Once I got the application figured out though, I noticed how little of the product I actually needed. Despite the formula being so liquidy it´s super high pigmented - I've never had anything like this! Plus, the liquid formula means it dries down within  a few seconds so there's no danger of smudging the lipstick before it´s dry!

Once it´s dry though I sadly wasn't impressed with it anymore. Maybe I'm blind but I cannot see the difference between the Liquid Matte´s velvety finish and my other matte liquid lipsticks. One thing I immediately noticed was the sticky feeling it left on my lips. It´s not as sticky as a lipgloss but sticky enough to be uncomfortable fore me. That also neglects the point of a lightweight formula as the stickiness means I´ll constantly notice it on my lips. I also feel like due to its stickiness whenever I press my lips together the colour moves a tiny bit and it makes the lipsticks patchy. I was hoping the lightweight formula was going to mean that wasn't going to sit in my lines but oh my, it so does - and that within minutes of me applying it. I'm seriously scared to laugh with it on as it looks ridiculous. That's not what I expect from a good matte liquid lipstick.

These points are not ideal but I could live with that.. somewhat. However, the Liquid Matte also does not last as long as I´d expect of a matte lipstick. It kind of transfers slightly to cups and whatever I'm eating - I personally believe that's due to the stickiness. While it might last a good 4-5 hours before fading away once I eat something my bottom lip goes patchy and the inner side of my top lip is basically gone. I love liquid matte lipsticks as they usually last forever and you don't have to worry about them - but with this one I have to as it fades and transfers. I was hoping that with the lightweight formula it would be easy to just reapply and go with it - but that just makes it super uncomfortable to wear.

On the plus side though, it does not smudge around the edges - even with no lip liner. In the end, I'm not really sure if it´s down to my lips but due to the mentioned problems it just doesn't work for me.

The Lip Strobe In Angelic

I'm not much a lipgloss gal (I actually kind of hate them) but how could I say no to a metallic, duo-chrome ros├ęgold lipgloss?! That's like everything I love combined into one product! Angelic is such a gorgeous colour! It has a metallic sheen to it and goes from a gorgeous dark gold to a pink depending on the light. I'm so, so, so in love with the colour!

However, as I said I'm not a fan of lipgloss and this one combines all the things I hate about it: It´s sticky, it doesn't last, it smudges and it transfers. Honestly though, for the pretty colour I'm willing to deal with all of that. Plus, the lasting power is actually quite good for a lipgloss. With a little bit of drinking and snacking it lasts for about 3 hours on my lips which is okay for a lipgloss. Plus, the colour fades away quite naturally and only seems to lose its shine while the glitter pigments stay. That means I don't lose the whole effect but just get a slightly less intense look which I adore.

It looks super pretty on top of Muse or it can be worn alone (although I wouldn't really do that - it´s just too sticky for me). I can totally see why these are a hit! If you love lipgloss and/or can deal with the downsides to wearing them these would be perfect and look absolutely stunning! Personally, I'm not sure that I would buy another colour of the Lip Strobes although I'm quite impressed with them! I'm sure glad to own Angelic. It makes for a gorgeous accent lip and I´d love to wear it on a special occasion when I'm prepared to deal with a lipgloss.

Overall, I must admit that I'm not overly impressed with this set. From what I've heard I expected so much from these products and was very much let down. For the Liquid Matte and Lip Strobe I'm not sure I´ll ever buy another one unless a colour really stands out to me. I just know and own better liquid matte lipsticks and am personally just not the biggest fan of lipglosses. The one product I absolutely fell in love with (quite unexpectedly actually) is the Lip Contour though. This might be my favourite lip pencil I have ever tried and I´ll definitely buy a few more shades of this one - especially one that fits my natural lip colour! It´s just absolutely perfect and I love the creamy consistency and the smooth application. Lining my lips has never been so much fun!
