Christmas Market Wonders: Cologne

Since I moved further away from my favourite Christmas Market of all time this year - you'll be in my heart Tollwood - I knew it was time to find a new Christmas Market for my annual Christmas shopping trip. It´s a tradition I've grown so fond of and maybe next year with a little bit more preparation I can actually visit Munich again. Before that happens though I made a little trip with my Mom to Cologne to see what the Christmas Markets there were all about. Maybe they could fill the Tollwood-sized hole in our hearts.

We were really surprised to see that the main shopping streets were basically free of anything Christmas related. We imagined there to be tuns of huts and decorations lining these streets already but only a few lonely decorations were to be seen. Cologne definitely has the big plus of featuring many different Christmas markets with different themes at different locations though. Mom and I made our first stop for a little bit of food at the Markt der Engel - translates to Market of Angels. I was instantly drawn to these big stars hanging in the trees - how gorgeous do they look?! The whole Christmas Market had a very elegant, white Christmas theme which I adore! All the huts looked the same except for the little decorations at the top which all were stunning and so glittery. The atmosphere was really nice and relaxed there.

We ended our trip on the Christmas Market under the Cologne Cathedral. It looked suspiciously tiny at first but once you step through the gates you have to realise that it´s actually huge! It´s definitely more on the kitschy side but I love the the gigantic Christmas tree right in the middle. They've also made a roof of fairy lights leading right to it which I think is so cosy! Right under the Christmas tree was also a stage where we had the time of our lives listening to swing variations of Christmas songs in Cologne dialect - it was magical! The kitschy atmosphere is definitely not for everyone but I enjoy it and the hustle of people in there from time to time.

It was such a nice trip to Cologne with Mom. We had an absolutely blast and did some Christmas shopping together. Out of the two Christmas Markets we saw it´s hard to pick a favourite because they're so different from another. Personally, I love the more elegant vibe of the Markt der Engel and I absolutely adore the paper stars hanging in the trees as it makes it all the more special. Plus, I'm a blogger at heart and love a white Christmas theme. I do really enjoy the kitschy, typical vibe of the Christmas Market at the Cathedral. The fairy light roof and gigantic Christmas tree are amazing! Sadly, neither of these take the spot of my favourite Christmas Market either but I love how close they are for me and I´ll definitely make a day trips to Cologne in the upcoming years as well!
