Can Makeup Revolution´s Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit Hold Up To Kylie Cosmetics?

By a show of hands:  Who als has way too many lipsticks and still buys more? *holds up both hands* I´m such a sucker for lipsticks in general and very specifically liquid lipsticks. One of the most featured lipsticks on this blog might be the Kylie Cosmetics´ Matte Liquid Lipstick in Candy K. I feel like I just keep repeating how much I love it. However, they´re hard to get in Germany and they´re quite expensive so when Makeup Revolution released their lip kits I was over the moon. The Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit in Echelon was in my basket faster than I could even think and when it arrived I found it strikingly similar to Candy K. So I put both to the direct test (aka wearing them each on half of my lip) to see if Echelon would hold up as a good dupe to Candy K.

Packaging and Price

Both come packaged in a carton that feels very sleek and fancy. The tubes and lipliners look very similar too. Both have something very special to them. Candy K obvisously features the black cap, drops of black and Kylie´s signature which looks very sleek and high-end. Echelon feels a little cheaper but still looks very sleek and the rose gold cap is truly every blogger´s dream. Personally, I really enjoy the feel and look of both!

Do we even really have to talk about the price here? Candy K currently retails at $29. Echelon costs a third of that with a retail price of $10.

Colour and Look

As I wore both at the same time I was afraid it was going to look really weird - who knows how similar the dried colours actually are on my lips - but actually it´s really hard to tell a difference! Echelon has a slightly more orange undertone and Candy K features a slightly lilac one. Both are warm pinky nudes though! One thing that really annoys me about both kits though is how the lipliner does not exactly match the colour of the liquid lipstick. The difference is definitely more striking for Echelon but even with Candy K it really frustrates me.

As for the applied look they both look great on my lips. Even after wearing them for a while I still really enjoy the look. Both kind of stick to any cracks in my lips tough which tends to get slightly worse of the course of the day. This is slightly worse for Candy K but over the whole day there´s not a whole lot of difference here.

Appliance

Both formulas are really fluid so that they´re very easy to spread around your lips. Still they´re both really well pigmented which makes more than one coat totally unnecessary. One thing I´ve noticed about Echelon though is that it often applies kind of streaky which goes away when it´s drying. It´s just something you need to get used to. Also as both lipliners are slightly different colours I feel the need to cover them fully which makes appliance for both lipsticks a little tougher.

The one significant difference between both is the doe foot applicator. That of Echelon is very sleek and small which makes appliance really easy and still allows enough product to be taken up. However, the whole applicator just doesn´t feel super sturdy - mine is even bended. The applicator of Candy K is wider and scrubby looking. It feels a lot softer on the lips and despite being scrubby it´s still easy to stay in the lines. The whole applicator does feel a lot sturdier too. Which one is better definitely depends on your personal preference though!

Longevity

I´ve worn both at the same time for two days in a row. One the first day I was kind of nice to both and they lasted really well. Both didn´t fade away nor did they bleed around the edges. They did what liquid lipsticks are supposed to do: Stick to their place once they are dry. They also didn´t leave any stains on my glass - so they seem pretty kiss proof to me.

However, on the second day I actually put them to the test: I ate oily Chinese food, rubbed my lips together, etc. Candy K didn´t really seemed bothered by that. The inside of my lips (aka the lip butt) did fade away slightly but nothing that impacted the look of the whole lipstick. Echelon however couldn´t really deal with the challenge. It did bleed at the edges even though I had applied the lipliner. It also crumbled a lot and faded away starting from the lip butt. It looked so bad after a few hours that there was basically no chance of saving it unless you took it all of and reapplied it. It seemed that mostly the oily food was the cause of this though! As once I reapplied it it was fine for the rest of the afternoon.

Comfort

When it comes to comfort they´re both really different. Echelon feels slightly sticky even when it´s dried. I can feel it drying out my lips which makes it generally uncomfortable. It also feels like it´s cracking and crumbling all the time. This already starts when I apply it as in the process of drying it feels really tight around my lips - almost like it´s pulling them.

As I said, Candy K is one of my favourite lipsticks. It dries really comfortably and then you just don´t feel it at all. As with the longevity you basically don´t have to worry about it which is something I adore about it. At the end of the day it is kind of drying on my lips but nothing that can´t be solved with a good lip balm over night.

Personally, I love Candy K just a little more than Echelon. Especially the comfort and longevity of Candy K is super important to me as I like to wear lipstick but I hate feeling it or having to worry about much of it has faded away. I think my bank account might disagree though and for the price difference you can´t really expect too much from Echelon. It is a really close dupe when it comes to colour! If you´re just wearing it for a few hours or have the time and means to reapply it after lunch/dinner/etc. it´s a really great drugstorelipstick. It just can´t reach Candy K in all regards.

What do you think: Are more expensive lipsticks always better? Which of these would you rather buy?
