#Girlproblems - The Struggle With Underwear

Life as a girl isn´t easy. Life as a boy isn´t either and don´t even get me started on minorities. But I´m coming from the standpoint of a 20-year-old woman/girl so I thought I´d approach all the problems we girls experience in a little series called #Girlproblems. Today let´s talk underwear.

By this point I´m assuming you´re either letting out a deep sigh as you know all the problems I´m going to discuss here or you might be wondering "what even is the problem with our underwear?!". If you belong to the latter group, congratulations! I´m really jealous of you. You can still read this post and join us in our rants though (or tell us your secrets so that we don´t have to worry about these things anymore). To everyone who is part of the first group: Welcome, this post is for you!

Comfort vs. Looks

Why is this even a decision we have to make?! How does the industry still not allow me to feel sexy and comfortable at the same time? The fact that most women yearn to take their bra off as soon as they´re home should tell you a lot! Honestly, most days I´m choosing comfort over looks and I wear something that makes me look like I´m 13 years old. As I´m forever single it´s not the worst thing but I´ve noticed it can drag my confidence quite a bit! I then feel terrible and shy. Beautiful underwear definitely gives me a little boost of confidence and just that little spark of feeling good though. But having to readjust it constantly or always thinking about getting home and taking it off is annoying (& doesn´t look very attractive either).

The Amount

Partly due to the decision of comfort or looking good and partly due to the sizing (which I´ll discuss later) most women own a huge amount of underwear. We do have to have underwear for all occasion: some for our period, some for chilling at home, some for a lazy day at uni, some for a special night, some for exercising, etc. And then we are judged by fellow women and also men by the amount of underwear we own. What?! Like there is the perfect number or bras and panties that you should own...

Taking Care of Them

So apparently we also have to take extra care of our underwear, at least if you want them to look and feel good. Just throwing them in your closed won´t do especially if they have delicate details. Excuse me, but as a student I don´t have enough space in my closet or my room to dedicate a big section just to neatly lay out my underwear. Also the washing temperature and the kind of detergent you use can determine the state of your underwear. Then there´s also the whole danger of bra clasp while washing. I´ve had to learn it the hard way that bra clasps can really rip apart your favourite blouse. So never ever forget to put them in a special washing bag. Who am I kidding, I forget this most of the time.

Details

Lace, little bows or stones are nice and look sexy and/or cute but they can also make wearing the underwear they´re attached to very hard. Have you tried wearing a tight top with a lace bra? It´ll probably show. Same goes for other textures, colours or patterns. Also many details go really weird after a few washing. I love having detailed underwear as they make me feel really good but they´re honestly just sitting in my closet as I never really wear them. When will these details become wearable?!

Being Brave/Confidence

I have pretty small breasts which means I could easily wear beautiful lace barrettes. There´s just one big problem: I´m not brave enough to wear something that doesn´t fully cover up my breasts. I´m afraid that my nipples might be showing or that it looks like I´ve got not breasts at all. I just don´t feel really confident when it comes to my breasts. Partly this is caused by my sexuality (I identifyy as demisexual) but I think it´s partly due to society as well. Breasts and vaginas are mostly talked about as these objects that men are always lusting after. We should much rather teach little girls that breasts and vaginas and talking about them are normal and beautiful and that they are not just there for men to enjoy. A little bit of body confidence can go a long way!

Sizing

What is your bra size? If it has taken you a moment to answer that don´t worry. Most of us (me included) are wearing the wrong size anyway. Luckily, sizing is a problem that mostly just affects our bras as the sizes for your jeans are most likely also the size of your panties. However, the sizing system for bras is totally messed up. Cup sizes and circumference are not all there is to breasts. There are so many different shapes and sizes of them and the sizing system just doesn´t appreciate that. Personally, I can never fill out the top of any bra which can look so ridiculous. We need a better sizing system that focuses on the shape as well as the size and circumference.

Price, Quality & Variety

Obviously, the better quality you want the more you´ll need to pay. To even be slightly comfortable you have to spend a good amount of money though. I don´t know about you but I´m a student living off my parents so money is not something I have a lot of. So I´ll just have to run around with ill-fitting, uncomfortable or cheap bras until I make enough money to pay for the better ones. Why are good bras so expensive?! Also you better have what society declares as the perfectly sized breasts. If you have bigger or smaller ones you will not be able to choose from a good variety of bras.  Why are we not celebrating all sizes and giving every woman what she needs?!

I´m sure I´ve not even included all the problems there are with our underwear. Leave me any that I´ve missed in the comments and I´ll surely go on a rant with you. I know we´re all strong women and we´ve managed to work around these problems for years and years and I want to say a huge "Congrats!" for that. But I think it´s important to talk about issues and make everyone more aware of them. Then maybe something will change someday. Also I just really like to have a good rant from time to time.

Have you experienced any of these problems? What in your opinion is the most pressing one?

  2. I has having a conversation with my friends today talking about how difficult it is to be a girl and how much 'maintenance' we need! Fancy clothes and shoes, makeup, skincare products, hair colouring, shaving, tanning, nails, and so many more things!! Great post x

    1. Yes to that! There´s so much we have to do and so much society doesn´t want us to do (you know, like normal bodily functions!). There´s definitely still a lot left for feminism to fight in this department

    1. Exactly! If I´m wearing a bra I want that to be appreciated but as a single gal I can´t stand out in the street with my bra showing...

  4. I'm with you on teaching body confidence, we should never have to feel low about the size or appearance of our body parts, and like you I never feel comfortable unless my entire breast is covered for fear of nipple showing!

    1. Yes, yes & yes to that! I also figured out that my fear of my nipples showing might come from watching Friends as a teenager & just suddenly becoming very aware that that was a possibility, haha.

  5. It sucks so much that underwear cant be both sexy & comfortable.. I really like wearing sexy underwear out because it makes you feel more confident but half wear through the day i'm already annoyed by it!
