Christmas Market Inspiration: DIY

Handmade Cinnamon Soaps wrapped in white-and-red
Whenever I´m lost for someone´s Christmas gift I always go around my local Christmas market and browse the stalls. There are always so many amazing handmade things on offer. I´m also very much a fan of personal gifts. When my sister and I were younger our Mom would help us create the most amazing handmade gifts for our family. One year we made cookies and decorated the jars or another year we crafted personalized key rings. So how could I leave out Christmassy DIYs when bringing the spirit of Christmas into my own home?! All these Christmas DIYs could make great gifts for friends but also an easy yet meaningful gift for aunts, uncles and the likes.

First off the bad news: I had everything ready to create three DIYs myself and explain them to you in detail. Unfortunately, I had trouble finding all the ingredients I needed. The only place where I could find them was Amazon and they were always in huge quantities that I´d honestly never use up. Also my basket came to a whopping 90€ for the three DIYs and as much as I love my blog that´s money I´d rather spent on the necessities of life. So instead I took it to the internet and found some amazing DIYs for you to try out!

Handmade Baubles in different designs

My first thought about Christmas market DIYs was definitely soap. There are just so many stalls selling incredible smelling soaps! However, I quickly found out that I´d need to handle lye to make soap properly. With all my experience from 11th grade chemistry I knew I wasn´t confident enough to do this. If you´re feeling very brave though I found this amazing Gingerbread Soap and this Peppermint Soap. If you´re not feeling very festive and would rather have something soothing and relaxing try this Rosemary Lavender Soap.

Another great thing are bath and shower supplies. I know I´d be thrilled to be getting anything like this as a gift (or you could just make them for yourself). First off, this Cinnamon Sugar Scrub sounds wonderful! If you know someone who´s a bath person definitely try these Ylang-Ylang And Rose Bath Melts. They look absolutely incredible! I was also very intrigued by this Basic Shower Gel recipe. You can just choose any essential oils you want to either make it super festive or to gift someone their favourite scent. Also here´s another Basic Shower Gel recipe that sounds super interesting as it mostly uses ingredients you already have in your kitchen!

Selection of Scented Handmade Soaps

Personally, I love scented candles (almost all women seem to do!) but store bought ones give me a headache. Luckily, I never had any problems with self-made candles though, so these would make a perfect gift too! I´ve found this Basic Candle Recipe to be very easy to understand. Again, you can use whatever essentials oils you´d like. If you want a very easy no-wax candle, try out this No-Wax Fruit Candle. It sounds super interesting and it would make a fab gift for someone who likes alternative products! To make any candle look nicely packaged you could also create some beaitufil candle holders. On Wedding Bee I´ve found some great Ideas for Center Pieces featuring amazing candle holders and Decoist has a list of 17 Easy DIY Holiday Candle Holders which will look pferct in anyone´s living room!

What´s still missing from my DIY list now? Yup, Christmas decorations! Because what would make a cuter gift than a handmade Christmas tree decoration?! The easiest thing would be buying clear plastic baubles and filling them with festive decorations (e.g. glitter, small twigs, tiny acorns, fake snow, maybe even a scent). I´ve also seen a lot of people cutting up old CDs and glueing the pieces on to a plastic bauble which looks amazing! Over on Cer Vera Paeria you can find a List of DIY Decorations which look so cute and Holidappy show you some Tree-Worthy Christmas Ornaments which would make any blogger out there happy! Lastly, over on DIY Enthusiasts is a list of Easy DIY Tree Decorations which need a bit more work but all look totally stunning!

Red and White Christmas Baubles in different styles and sizes

I kind of miss the years when we could make Christmas DIY in the weeks leading up to Christmas. It´s definitely a tradition I´d love to revive in the future. Especially now that my sister and I are grown-up and we can do some actual work instead of just watching Mom do everything. Also I´m really intrigued by the shower gels. I´d definitely love to try them out some time in the future, maybe even on a girls night in when we can all pay a part of the ingredients and there'd be bigger quantities used.

Have you ever done a Christmas DIY? Which of these would you love to receive as a gift?

  3. As a kid I remember making candles and small gifts for the family. Also baking Plaetzchen and wrapping them up in tins and wrapping paper where on the list. It was so much fun too. Shame these days they don't do DIY that often anymore. Merry Christmas x
