What Is Your Blog´s Brand?

When I did my internship I had the opportunity to create a few powerpoint slides for an upcoming seminar. This also meant a ton of research in the field of consumer psychology wish was really interesting. Especially this Ted Talk by Morgan Spurlock got me thinking. He has is personal brand (aka himself) defined at one point which I found so intriguing. So far I´d only seen my blog´s brand as being myself and I had never thought I could define it in a "classic" way. So I went and did a little research to find out my blog´s brand.

First off, branding is a really wide field and it´s too much to cover it all in just one post. Also I´m really no expert in this field. With this post I just wanted to share my experience with defining my blog´s brand. If you´re really interested in it all, I suggest doing some extensive research yourself.

What is a personal brand?

I think for bloggers the personal brand is most important because your blog is supposed to reflect your personality. A personal brand is an overall concept that takes in the way people behave, the body language, the clothes they wear, their makeup, everything the do an are. For most bloggers this is where their unique value lies and it´s what drives your readers back to your blog. In a perfect world your blog´s brand is 100% authentic to your personality and therefore everything you do works towards it.

My Experience Defining My Brand

I´ve found a million different websites and blogs that give tips on how to define a brand. Most of them are focused on actual businesses which doesn´t seem to be the best fit for a blog brand definition. The ones I did find intended for bloggers focused more on the layout, colours and fonts of the blog which is part of it but it only defines my blog as much as my makeup defines me. So I´ve tried to gather up a few websites that I found really helpful in defining my blog´s brand.

Forbes Magazin define being authentic as the most important part of your personal brand. They also ask seven questions to uncover your personal brand. I thought I´d answer the two that seem most important for me. "What are your top values?" Honesty, respect and supporting others. "What do people frequently compliment you on?" Writing though provoking and honest blog posts, being intelligent and generally being a sweet person.

Over on Big Brand System you can find a worksheet to work out your personal brand. You basically rank your brand on a scale from contemporary to traditional in different points. Most of the dots I made were more towards the modern spectrum with a few in the middle and the odd one on the traditional side. So if I take this all together, my blog is a modern and contemporary themed brand that also focuses on traditional and careful planning and research and tries to include a good mix of fun and seriousness.

Many websites define the unique value or your unique selling proposition as the most important thing to define your brand. This is basically the one thing that separates you from every other brand in your field of work. I think this is very hard to define for bloggers as our unique value should definitely be our personality and well that´s what we´re actually trying to define here. It took me quite a while to figure out what this could be for me but I think with "a passionate twenty-something year old talking honestly and openly about Beauty, Lifestyle, Mental Health and her view on the world" I´ve defined my blog´s unique value quite well.

One of the most helpful tools I´ve found was this Brandality Quiz by Kaye Putnam. Brandality is your brand personality and the questions are easy and really fun to answer. I got the Caregiver Archetype which I really think fits well with me. It doesn´t perfectly define my personality as I know people who would fit this archetype way better but it´s definitely what I try to achieve with my blog. I kind of want to be a big sister to everyone and help out and support others wherever I can. Also "thoughtful" has been used to describe my writing before.

Heartifb shared six questions to your blog essence. This is definitely similar to the Brandality Quiz with the difference that it´s not a full online quiz that gives you a solution at the end. It was definitely fun to play around with the questions though as you are asked to fill out the blanks in sentences. Again, I thought I´d answer the ones that stood out to me most. "In my world..." there´s happiness for everyone. "I believe in..." the good in people and confidence towards solutions. "I am tired of..." ignorant people. "If my blog was a clothing brand the people who would wear it would be..." young adults who want to express themselves and find happiness in this world.

With the experiences I´ve made through all this research I think defining your blog´s brand can be as easy or hard as you want it to be. While it´s a big decision there´s no one way to figure it out. I think for my blog the mix of descriptions I´ve found would be perfect. If you have no clue what your blog´s brand could be, definitely check out the Brandality Quiz. I´ve found it to be quite eye-opening.

Here are a few words that I want to define my blog´s brand: big sister, helpful, thoughtful/thoughtprovoking, honest, happy/fun, comitted/resourceful, supportive. What are yours?

  1. Great post. I definitely need to fill out that form! I think the big thing is knowing yourself first. What makes you tick, how you react to certain things. When you know who you are then I think you know your blog and aesthetic because it's a personal place of self expression :) xx

    1. Thank you. :) Yes, definitely. Knowing yourself is the key point! I do find it hard to define my personality though. I´m "me" and that´s it.

  2. I took the Brandability quiz and I got the Creator Archetype and I don't know if that fits me or not? I think it does to a point but I don't if I would call it my 'brand' - it is very interesting though.

    1. I do think it doesn´t have to get you down to a t. I´m definitely no motherly figure either which is an element to the Caregiver Archetype. It´s always a good starting point to defining your brand though.

    1. Yes, I didn´t know how important this was before I did the research either. I just always thought defining my brand as "me" was enough. Turns out it´s not. Good luck with the Quiz!

  5. This is really helpful! I did the test and got Hero Archetype - so interesting to read about it. Not sure if it fits me entirely but I did the test as honest as possible :p

    1. Thank you. I don´t think you have to fit your Archetype perfectly. I´m definitely no motherly figure & do not attend to be one. I´d much rather be a big sister. I just like how it gives you an idea in what direction to go.

  6. This is really helpful and all things to think about. Honestly I think what leads to a successful and definitive personal brand is staying true to your style and yourself. It's such a pet peeve when I see bloggers trying to conform into the typical 'all white blogger mode' if that's not their style or who they are. I say be yourself and everything else follows and I felt that was the sentiment you were writing about! :) Great post xx

    1. Thank you :) Yes, I don´t like bloggers trying desperately to fit into something their not either. I love to see their personality and not some made up story about who they are!
