Fantastic Beast & Where to Find Them - Review (spoiler-free)

I love movies, I do with all of my heart. I have no more space in my shelves for more DVDs yet I can never refrain myself from buying more. However, somehow I never get around seeing them in the theatre. So imagine how thrilled I was when my friends decided to go see Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them. Harry Potter was my childhood; I just adore this magical world. Going out of the theatre I had so many thoughts that I wanted to share, so I´m skipping the post I had planned for today and instead am giving you a review of Fantastic Beasts. Also there´ll be almost no spoilers ahead!

I went into the film with only very little knowledge about the story. Here´s what I knew:

Newt Scamander, the author of Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them - a textbook for first year Hogwarts students - is traveling to New York with a suitcase full o magical creatures who by accident escape him. Obviously he then has to find his creatures before they expose the wizarding world to the muggles.

Honestly, I loved going in with this little knowledge, it really made me excited about what was to come and I found myself not trying to guess where the story was headed but instead enjoying the journey. So if you haven´t seen the trailer yet, I say go in with as little knowledge as possible. It makes it all even more magical. I will say though that the story got a lot darker than I thought. I believed I was in for something like the first Harry Potter film which it isn´t. Although I´m not a big fan of dark, unnerving, and scary sides of films (they give me nightmares) I do wish we could´ve explored more of this dark side, especially the characters involved in it. But there also were a lot of aww and funny moments though and a few stunning magical views. All in all, the film kept a good mixture between dark and light scenes.

I´ve found all characters to be believable, lovable, quirky and unique. It was fun getting to know them and following them on this wild journey. Also the acting was brilliant. Every character was really brought to life and could stand out against the others. I even felt sympathy for the darker characters. From all the actors involved I only new Eddie Redmayne who I was expecting a great performance of based on his performance in The Theory of Everything. Let´s just say I wasn´t disappointed.

Even though this story is set in the same universe as Harry Potter and the atmosphere is very similar you can clearly see the differences between the American and the British wizarding world. I loved all the link backs to the Harry Potter films! However, I found it quite hard to get into it. I think it´s maybe due to the fact that we aren´t guided by an 11-year-old boy who has no clue about the wizarding world but by a grown man who very well knows his way around (even if he´s a bit awkward). Also it´s not set in a secluded wizarding school with a magical forest, it´s set in New York which honestly is just not as magical. I did like how we as viewers were guided through the differences though by Newt who has only little knowledge about American wizarding world and another very special character.

As with Harry Potter, the soundtrack was amazing. I got chills throughout the film! I´m listening to it as I write this. Also I´m not expert but I loved the special effects and all the fantastic beasts, even the weird looking ones. They were created with love for details! One thing I will say though is that I´m still left a bit confused about certain parts in the story. Maybe I need to reread Harry Potter as my research showed just how well the parts that I was confused about bind Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts together.

I also found out later that the film was a stunning 133 minutes long. It honestly didn´t feel that long. Everything is so detailed and magical that I really was in another world for those two hours. Also it was hard to let go of this world. If I´m being completely honest I wouldn´t mind going back right now to see the whole film again. I believe there´s still so much more to see!

Following adults instead of children definitely gives a more adult view on the wizarding world. It seems that this film has definitely found its target audience: the formerly young kids who grew up watching Harry Potter. Honestly, if you enjoy Harry Potter at all, this movie is definitely worth checking out! However, you can still enjoy it without any Harry Potter knowledge. If you´re not afraid of the darker side, definitely see it in 3D as it´s already spectacular in 2D. I´m very interested what the sequel has in store for use as I´m definitely not done exploring this side of the wizarding world.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Will you be going to see Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them? If you´ve already seen it where you left a bit confused too?

Also would you like me to do more film reviews?
