Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics - Worth the Hype?

This is finally a makeup party I´m not too late too. Well, maybe a little late as everyone is already raving about this palette. Sadly, I hat to wait one and a half weeks longer than everyone else to get this palette because that´s when the German release date was (living here is hard when it comes to beauty products!). Waiting was the hardest part for me. Imagine me not-so-patiently clicking my nails on the table ever since the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics palette was introduced in August. I was so excited when it finally arrived at my door about two weeks ago!

The rose gold packaging is gorgeous and a blogger´s dream! It features these rays, some of which are higher than others, some of which are reflective and that makes for gorgeous light effects. I also love that it´s different from the other Naked palettes. (It also makes for gorgeous Insta shots). It features a magnetic lock mechanism so that you don´t have to break off all your nails to open it. The only part I don´t like about it is that it´s all plastic which makes it feel a little bit cheap. I´m in love with the big mirror though! This comes in so handy when you don´t have a mirror near you. The palette also comes with a two-sided brush which is honestly pretty good. Other than usually, I wouldn´t throw it out immediately. I´ve actually been using it pretty regularly.

The Naked Ultimate Basics offers 12 brand new shades from Urban Decay. Most of the shades are matte and variations of nude shades. The top row focuses mostly on variations of nude-ish violet shades while the bottom row features variations of brown shades. Urban Decay only promotes one demi-matte shade, however, my palette features two glittery shades (Blow, a beautiful vanilla highlighting shade, and Magnet, a cool-toned grey). I love that the palette features warm- und cool-toned shades. There´s definitely shades for every skin tone and every look here. I also think these shades are all gorgeous for the colder seasons and I bloody love that they´re mostly matte. It´s honestly hard to find good matte nude shades that aren´t chalky.

Quality-wise these are the best eyeshadows I have ever tried, there´s no point in arguing about that. Urban Decay are known for their high-quality eyeshadows for a good reason. I wasn´t expecting a color-payoff like that. I was also stunned by how buttery soft they were. Normally, matte eyeshadows tend to be a bit chalky but not these ones. Honestly, if these were a jumper, it would be my favourite one (okay, that´s not really relatable, is it?).

However, there are a few things I´ve noticed about this palette. Firstly, this wouldn´t be the one palette I´d take on holiday with me. I often pair one or two of these eyeshadows with others that I already own. I just don´t feel like the colours all go perfectly with each other. The top row is all from one colour family, so you can easily wear these together, the second row does only ever go with one other shade though. Colour-wise even though these are all gorgeous, I´ve found that there´s mostly really light or really dark colours in this palette. I´m missing these medium shades I can wear all over my lid. Additionally, I noticed a bit of creasing with these eyeshadows. Weirdly enough, this was only on my left eye, so I don´t know if this is due to the eyeshadows or because my left eyelid is weird. Lastly, these shades are almost too blendable for me. I often end up with just one brown mush instead of distinctive colours when I use just shades from this palette. Maybe that´s down to me not being a MUA though.

from left to right - Blow, Nude, Commando, Tempted, Instinct, Lethal, Pre-Game, Extra Bitter, Faith, Lockout, Magnet, Blackjack

These are all the negative points I could think off and they all fit in one abstract, that´s crazy! And even besides these points, I´ve been using this palette daily ever since I got it and I usually don´t even wear eyeshadow daily. All the shades are gorgeous, they have amazing colour-payoff and pigmentation, they´re easily blendable, there´s no fallout and they stay in place for the whole day (no matter how long your day is). What more could a  girl want?! The only thing that could make them even better is a good primer beneath them but I forgot to bring mine to my parents´.  If you love nude eyeshadows, this is definitely a palette for you!

Do you plan on buying the Naked Ultimate Basics palette?

  1. I think you would be surprised how well all the shades go together once you try it! Last time I was wearing Extra Bitter and Faith, and decided to make it a bit more smokey with Lethal. I was surprised myself! I know they might not look like they go together but they make for very interesting combinations!

  3. I think on the top row a lot of the shadows look really similar so that's probably part of the reason why when you do your shadow you're finding it all sort of mushes into one colour? I love the look of this palette and Urban Decay always seems to tempt me...although quality-wise I have to say I used to think the UD shadows were the best of the best, but now I think LORAC shadows outshine them by a mile!

    1. You´re right, that could be it. Although this also happens with the shades in the bottom row. Maybe I´m just not good at blending, haha.
I´ll have to try out Lorac eyeshadows then!

    1. Thank you. This packaging is absolutely stunning. It was one of my main reasons to get this palette. I guess I´ll have to buy a better blending brush, mine is good but maybe not good enough, haha.
