EOS Lipbalm: Worth The Hype?

The Evolution Of Smooth Smooth Sphere Lip Balms have been around for a while. I was always quite curious about them because they got so mixed reviews. One part was making them sound like the best lip balms on earth while the other (smaller) part could only tell how much those dried their lips out. With  £5.99 each they are very expensive for a lip balm, so I didn´t buy one until now. My local drugstore finally offered them and I just had to pick one up.

Out of all the different flavors EOS offers I chose one called Sweet Mint. It´s in a pastel mint color with more of a blue undertone. Other flavors have different colored packaging so that you can find the one you like in an instant. I think all colors are really pretty. The balm it self is in a white color with a slightly yellow tone and goes transparent on the lips. The round packaging is very cute and extraordinary and actually the thing that made those lip balms famous. It´s easy to grip and easy to open and close. It makes a clicking sound when it closes which I find very satisfying. The packaging is definitely bigger than most lip balms. On the one hand because of the size the lip balm is easier to find in a big bag, on the other hand it uses more storage which becomes a problem in small bags.

EOS advertises the lip balms with being 100% natural and 95% biological which could reason the price, I guess. I´ve had a look through the ingredients and I instantly noticed that there was no petrolatum in there. This is great as petrolatum builds a waterproof layer on the lips that makes them feel smooth but closes them off from any moisture. That kind of defeats the whole purpose of a lip balm. Instead, the main ingredients are shea butter, jojoba oil and vitamin E which are all great for lips. It is also gluten-, paraben- and phthalate-free. The only other thing I noticed is that it is made in the USA even though I bought it in Germany. If EOS is so caring about making their products natural, they could also place value on the economical footprint.

The lip balm has a very strong scent that needs getting used to. I can now appreciate it but at first it was very repulsive. It´s just a very sweet and very minty smell. If I didn´t know any better, I´d say it´s kind of a chemical scent. When you apply the lip balm to your lips, it tingles and gets really cold. That´s the peppermint in there. The effect stops after a few minutes and sometimes it can be quite nice. I´ve noticed that this lip balm isn´t as sticky as other ones. I never got a hair caught in there. It´s also very light weight on the lips. For me the balm lasts quite long on the lips. Even after drinking and light snacking it´s still there. When it´s gone my lips feel kind of stripped though and I have to apply a new layer of lip balm. Since I started using it my lips generally feel pretty nourished. I haven´t noticed that it´s drying them out. This lip balm also goes well with many of my lipsticks. It can be worn underneath them without problem but I´d always wait until the tingling has worn off before I apply the lipstick.

Overall, the EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm has great ingredients but is very expensive for not doing an extraordinary job. There are more nourishing lip balms out there for less. I think this lip balm can only be used as a daily one because it´s not rich and moisturizing enough for nightly use. The amount of lip balm you get is great. I think this one will probably last me until the end of the year. I guess if you use it several times a day, you´d go through it quicker. From what I´ve seen some of the product gets stuck down in the packaging which is just a waste of product. You can get to it it you disable the packaging but I wouldn´t know how to use loose chunks of lip balm. In the end, I am unsure wether I want to get another one because of the cute packaging or not because of the prize. We´ll see about that. I do love that they are made from natural ingredients. They would make an amazing gift though as many people don´t like splurging out like that on a simple lip balm.

  1. Like you, I prefer thicker and more nourishing lip balms. This one has never convinced me too much although its natural ingredients!

    1. I think the packaging and the natural ingredients are the only reasons I would consider buying another one. I just don´t know if those are worth the money.

  2. I have 3 EOS lip balms and find that they are great for an everyday go to just to shove in my bag. They aren't the most moisturising in the world but they aren't bad!

    1. I do love them for taking them with me. Mainly because the packaging is just so cute. I seem to need to get another one as well because I left mine at my parent´s house.

    1. I´m sure others love them as well. Our lips are all different, so mine might just be problematic with them. I think you´re very lucky if you´ve got no problem with them.

  4. I love Eos lipbalms, but I think they're a bit overrated as well. They're very cute and the ones I have smell delicous (honeysuckle honeydew, lemon, and summerfruit) but they don't stick on my lips for so long. I prefer more moisturising lipbalms from Bodyshop for example, or the Nivea lipbutters.
