On Friendship

I am a sucker for poetry. There, I said it. I love reading Shakespeare (though I might not always know what he´s saying) and sometimes reading a poem gives me shivers. It has even gotten to that point where I analyze lyrics in my head. But I also feel like poetry does not get enough attention in this century and in my age. Many young adults would rather watch non-sense TV-shows than spent a few minutes reading a poem (sometimes I am guilty of that as well). I wanted to share a beautiful poem with you today that means a lot to me.

On Friendship by Roy Croft

I love you
not for what you are, but what I am, when I am with you.

I love you
not only for what you have made of yourself, but what you are making of me.

I love you
for the part of me that you bring out.

I love you
for putting your hand into my heaped up heart and passing over all the frivolous and weak things that you cannot help seeing there, and drawing out into the light all the beautiful and radiant things no one else has looked quite far enough to find.

I love you
for ignoring the possibilities of the fool in me, and for laying hold of the possibilities of good in me.

I love you
for closing your eyes to the discards in me, and adding to the music in me by worshipful listening.

You have done it
without a touch, without a sign.

You have done it
by being yourself.

I won´t bore you with my interpretation of this poem because God knows that´s what you have/had to hear in school all the time (yes, I blame school for the lack of interest in poetry nowadays). It´s a poem that is rarely found on Google and yet is so beautiful. Let the words sink in and maybe spent a few moments just thinking about them. . .
